Chad was supposed to be a statistic. Growing up in the Detroit, Michigan area surrounded by some of life’s harshest realities, he was frequently abused and abandoned by his alcoholic and drug-addicted mother and her boyfriends. Chad and his older sister spent many horrifying nights locked in closets or in their room while the unspeakable occurred outside the door. Through uncharacteristic faith and an unfathomable will, the two managed to do more than just survive.
Despite waking many mornings to his mother passed out on the floor or simply gone without explanation, Chad worked hard and became an unlikely high school All-American in basketball for Detroit Catholic Central. He then went on to star in the Big East Conference at the University of Pittsburgh. After college, Chad fulfilled his dream of playing professional basketball. He went on to lead his team in both scoring and rebounding and was selected to start the All-Star game his rookie season. Then, at 25-years old and at the peak of his career, Chad had an unexpected epiphany.
While standing on the deck of the Canary Islands home his team provided, looking out over the idyllic water, Chad realized his life had much more to offer than dunking a basketball. To the astonishment of his teammates, coaches, agent, family, and friends he turned down a lucrative contract guaranteeing financial security for him and his family to return to his roots and make a difference in student’s lives.
Today, Chad is the founder and president of The Chad Varga Company, Inc., and has garnered a national reputation in the public school system for his unsurpassed ability to captivate and inspire teenagers through his compelling story and the vital lessons he learned along the way. He has now spoken to more than 3 million students throughout America and is often called the most gifted, memorable communicator his audiences have ever heard.
Chad’s core message is that anyone, even an abused, abandoned kid like him, can overcome the odds and obstacles in life and become a success. His passion is to help students discover their purpose and realize their dreams.
